1.Candling

Eggs are 'candled' by placing them up against a light source so you can see inside. It should be done in a darkened room and requires no special equipment. A flashlight can be turned into a 'candler' simply by cupping your hand around the beam so your thumb meets your fingers and an egg-shaped opening somewhat smaller than the egg is made. Place the egg on the circle made by your thumb and fore-finger so the light from the flashlight shines through the egg with you looking at the other side. It will not be possible to see much detail, but you will be able to determine if the egg is developing normally. . . . best done in the dark

The eggs should be candled at 7 days' incubation, then again at 14 and 21 days. By four days, the heart will be partially formed and if you are patient you will be able to see it beating. . . a red spider with a blob in the middle. .  the heart. At seven days, the eyes are visible as relatively large black dots, and the embryo will be in almost constant movement especially when you shine a light through the shell . At 14 days you should be able to make out a rough outline of the embryo and by 21 days the entire egg will be nearly blacked out. After this time you will gain more information by looking at the two ends of the egg, where you should be able to see occasional movement. Any eggs found to be dead or infertile should be removed from the incubator. Clear (infertile) eggs are fairly easy to spot at 7 days and should be discarded at that time.

On duck eggs if unsure sniff as a dead egg starts to smell pretty quickly ! Do not leave 'dead' eggs in the incubator too long, though. If they are allowed to remain in the incubator, they will rot and have even been known to explode with unbelievable results when you attempt to clean up. The gas will also kill the eggs nearby.
If using for geese eggs then buy the halogen candler as the cheaper one does not go through their shell






2. Breed  Defects


Do research on your breed. Different breeds have different sizes, conformations, egg production rates, fertility, hatchability, feed consumption and productive lifetimes. Research your breed to find the expected characteristics of your ducks. Breeders should have sound bones, straight toes and tight, well-fitting scales on the feet. Breeders should not have crooked breast bones or split wings and scruffy feathers unless in moult.
To check age :-Younger ducks will have bright colors on their legs and bills, a pliable, gristly breastbone and a soft and easily dented windpipe ( they do NOT like this checked!) . Older ducks will have dull legs and bills with hardening of the skin( soft on babies) , a hard breastbone and strong windpipe. On geese many grow a white line of feathers between the beak and the feathers this widens with age


Ducks Colour  Black, Chocolate, and Blue ducks often lose colour, especially in older females in Calls, Runners, Cayuga etc. Males are succeptible to developing white feathers after injuries and/or fights with other drakes. Solid coloured males (such as blue,chocolate, and black) should ONLY have white feathers from fighting - never from age . White feathers in colored plumage is a breed defect EXCEPT white around the bill, which is a sign of age in females with self colouring .


The Indian Runner's head must be quite slender ... long, flat, and trim. Placing a pencil on the skull can be used to determine how flat the head is and can measure the head's length. (A dished bill is a breed defect so do not use as the first thing to go .) A trim head does NOT have much depth between the top of the head and the bottom of the jaw.

Incorrect Beak Colour. This is a genetically dominant feature passed on by the male in many breeds so check the standards FIRST and do not buy other peoples rubbish for your breeding pen. These birds are fine as pets and should be clearly sold as such


Curled Toes If you are hatching your ducklings, you may see some come out of the egg with toes curled up like a fist. If they don’t straighten out after a day, you should correct them with a homemade splint. Cut a piece of cardboard to match the size of the duckling’s foot. Uncurl the foot and flatten it against the cardboard. Stick it to the cardboard with band-aids. Keep the splint on for about eight hours and check the status. Put on a new splint if needed. For broken twisted legs use cotton buds as splints remeber bird bones are hollow so anything for a splint must be light and non abrasive as their skin tears easily. Do not use for breeding

Angel Wing In Ducks And Geese

Angel wing, also known as slipped wing, crooked wing, airplane wing, or drooped wing, is a condition of ducks and geese where the last joint of the wing is twisted and the wing feathers point out, and do not lay smooth against the body. This happens more in goslings than ducks  with large breeds and Muscovy more prone than Calls. It is more common in geese and typically in either the left wing or both wings, only rarely in the right wing only. Males develop it more than females. The birds that develop the problem are perfectly healthy, they are just not as nice looking. Due to a high-calorie diet, especially one high in proteins and/or low in vitamin D, vitamin E, and manganese, one or both carpus (wrist) joints are retarded in their development relative to the rest of the wing; for reasons unknown, if only one wing is affected, it is usually the left one. The result is a wrist which is twisted outwards and unable to perform its usual function. Angel wing symptoms include stripped remiges (flight feathers) in the wrist area, or remiges protruding from wings at odd angles. In extreme cases, the stripped feathers may resemble sickly blue straws protruding from wings.

 You see, waterfowl that normally mature in the Arctic environment do not show any angel wing because of their naturally fast growth. It does appear, however, in those species that come from a more temperate environment where they grow slower under natural feeding conditions. But by feeding them unlimited, high protein, high energy feed, they grow unnaturally fast and their wing weight seems to outgrow the strength of the wing to support it. Theorized causes of angel wing are genetics, the excessive intake of carbohydrates and proteins,together with insufficient intake of vitamin E, low dietary calcium and manganese deficiency.  Further proof that this may be the cause can be found in an article that said"If their wings start drooping they are put on a diet of alfalfa; grass or layers pellets (instead of Chick Growers) until the condition clears up."


The only wild waterfowl populations known to be affected are those fed by man. In Sweden, ten different park populations of Canada geese produced angel wing. The following year one flock was not fed any artificial feed and there were no angel wing goslings produced.


Try not to feed high protein, high energy feed (such as turkey feed), provide plenty of room for exercise, keep in small groups, provide plenty of grass or green feed and keep the pen dark at night if possible so less eating occurs.  If you do notice a twisted wing, however, you can form a sling to hold the wing in place to allow proper development. If really bad and hindering the birds life or in a long lived goose like a Toulouse it can be removed by the vet and will look to be pinioned. Normally this will not breed and pass on with possible exceptions in Sebastopols who seem to pass the trait on.
 Breed Standards . . .  first , second third get a copy of the Poultry Club Standards (for  your Country) here it is done by the Poultry club of Great Britain . . if not sure  try an old fashioned thing borrow a library version. Alternatively read online at https://books.google.com/books?isbn=1444309382   (2009 edition)   It is expensive , heavy , crammed with facts and the best buy you will ever make. . .  if poorer hit ebay and get an older one as the standards get tweaked and get better pics/more information but are still pretty much that same through the years. They still have not added my suggestion for all Muscovies to have a pedicure before shows to stop me being grabbed by those claws if cross  but I can hope

3.Ducklings

Breed Selection.... The info on breeds is because some people use excess males for the freezer . Sorry if it upsets but
All domestic breeds (except the Muscovy) originate from the wild Mallard, but they have been developed for specific purposes. Most ducks still have a strong utility element — they provide meat and eggs — although there are exceptions. Like chickens, ducks are divided into bantam, heavy and light breeds, with the heavy breeds being better suited to the table and the light breeds providing the high egg layers.
Bantam Breeds 


The best known of the bantam breeds is the Call duck, so named for its loud and persistent quack. It makes a great pet, but is not a good layer. The Crested Miniature, which is an exhibition type, lays a useful 100 eggs a year, but the Silver Appleyard Miniature  or the Silver Bantam not only lays well but is also chubby for its size.  Bantam breeds are good flyers and need to have their wings clipped when newly purchased or simply buy before full winged.


Light/Medium Breeds 


This group includes the really good layers, such as the Indian Runner, an upright duck that cannot fly but is a superb forager on pasture and should not be confined to a small area. The Campbell was bred for egg laying — it can produce 300 a year . The Welsh Harlequin is another dual-purpose, hardy bird with a placid (dim) nature. These are not real meat birds but okay for a stir fry


Heavy Breeds 


These are the table birds, and at the top of the list is the Aylesbury. The true Aylesbury is now rare, and most such-named ducks are really white, heavy, Pekin-type hybrids known as Cherry Valley ducks . The Pekin is a semi-upright, quick-maturing, high meat-yielding bird, but a low layer in Britain, although U.S. keepers can expect up to 200 eggs a season.


The Rouen and Rouen Clair are kept for their looks, but still produce a good carcass and 100 or so eggs a season. The Silver Appleyard was developed to be a good foraging, dual-purpose bird, but it is also colourful in appearance.


Heavy breeds are not good flyers, with the exception of the Muscovy which originates from a tree duck, and with its crest, its hissing, and the red, fleshy protuberances on its face and bill (carbuncles), it looks quite different from other ducks. It makes a good table bird (though it is dark meat) and is a moderate layer, but it can be aggressive( actually a mega defensive parent but with a short fuse re dogs) and also eats small mammals.


Meat

For table purposes the main breeds are Commercial Pekin,Muscovy, Commercial Aylesbury, Cherry Valley ;Gressingham, local Crosses. and anyredundant young drakes. Commercial meat ducks may be reared in indoor or outdoor systems. When the birds reach the desired weight at around42 to 56 days old they are sent for slaughter.

The commercial meat Industry is based around the Aylesbury /Pekin / Meat breeds.  This is because genetic brreding programmes have taken place within the breeds achieving market weightsearlier than the other white breasted breeds. Consideration should be given to white plumage which dresses out easier for thetable. White hybrid duck meat is normally fattier than the rangier cousinds from the breeding pens and if spare drakes are used do notexpect the self basting supermarket duckling

The Muscovy / Barbary duck is a leaner drier almost fat freemeat but its darker colour and old fashioned flavour (lack of blandness) means that although popular in France and Russia many ignoreit as a viable meat breed. Barbary is now used referring to a  Commercial Pekin/Aylesbury x Muscovy in many supermarkets NOT a pure Muscovy which is much tastier and needs sourcing from the farm


Commercial breeds

Cherry Valley (U.K) aka Commercial Aylesbury aka  Commercial Pekin
These ducks can lay up to 300 eggs per year. Developed by the CherryValley organisation, they were designed to serve as a dual purpose bird, but some have turned out as quite good  layers. These are the poor ducks destined to be called Aylesbury by every ignorant numpty on ebay. . . a good game is spot the real Aylesbury

Produced when a small but tasty wild Mallard was crossed with thelarger commercial Pekin, giving a meaty, succulent duck

Food and Drink Feeding ducklings presents no problems at all. For the first four weeks, feed them on ordinary chick crumbs which you can buy in small quantities from any good pet shop or by the sack from farm supplies. Ducklings will eat those crumbs immediately upon hatching. From four weeks of age untilfeathering, the young birds should be fed grower's pellets which, once again, can be obtained from a pet shop or agricultural supplier. At all stages, simply feed ad-lib, leaving a constant supply of food with the birds and allowing them to eat as much and as often as they want.Sometimes they appreciate a few greens to augment their diet and the easy way of providing these is to hang a lettuce in their pen for them to peck at. Clean water must be available constantly but it must be provided in a manner which prevents the little birds taking a bath in it. Although day old ducklings will swim in the wild, they are able to do this because they are waterproofed by a film of oil which they get from their mother's plumage. Your hand-reared ducklings will not have this protection and will chill if they become wet. The best type of drinker is the inverted jam jar model which suppliers like Eltex can provide very cheaply. or a shallow bowl / jam jar lid  etc. A larger model will be useful after the first week or so but be sure to put some small stones around the exposed area so that the birds cannot clamber in for a swim !




If you find yourself completely out of feed, the following items can be used to make an emergency ration: oatmeal (uncooked),  wheat (uncooked), wholegrain breakfast cereal' (uncooked), cracked wheat, barley or other grain, chopped greens, grated fruits and vegetables, bugs. DO NOT FEED WHOLE GRAINS OF ANY KIND( chocking hazard/digestive nightmare), DRY BREAD(moisten to stop chocking), WILD BIRD SEEDS ( often treated), OR ANY KIND OF CAGED BIRD (budgie, canary, etc.) FEED until at least two weeks old as it takes time to digest . They can also eat fresh greens as long as they haven't been sprayed with anything (not even fertilizer). Any grains/ oatmeal can be turned into chick crumb in a liquidiser/old coffee grinder etc. Personally an old electric coffee grinder from a car boot converts adult pellets into chick meal to add as an alternative food and to get the older ducklings to accept the taste.

Eventually, at the age of seven or eight weeks, the day will comewhen you can release your birds into the garden. Ducklings can go straight out to a suitable pond and see how much truth they give to the phrase "taking like a duck to water". Provided there is sufficient plant life in the pond (to harbour insects), you need only scatter a few scoops of food around the margins to supplement the natural feeding which will be available. It is wise to avoid hand-feeding duck any more than is absolutely necessary as they tend to become over-tame and fall east prey to predators.. Looking after those birds over the spring and summer takes very little time and effort .Memo for the lazy a childs fishing net collects fast running ducklings easier than crawlingthrough the shrubs.

***beware slug pellets are intensly fatal to ducklings and goslings as are some fly sprays....read the label to check ...if harmful to cage birds they also kill poultry. Personally I use cattle fly strips or household ones near the brooder *****

.Feeding + Water

Drinkers. . .  never never the sweet plastic ones for hens if all else fails a washing up bowl with a brick works. Just work out how much they drink the fact that their beak does not fit in efficiently and how many times you will have to refill it


Useless for all except tinies... works for babies but not UV safe goes brittle if outdoors designed for townies

Food Bowls . . . At present I am using plastic Ikea dog bowls on a block wired to the fence through that nice little hole at the side. .  cheap simple a few of those means they all have a space to eat and any ill not eating are obvious. Ducks and gees both prefer food not at floor level so even old free plastic bread trays or plastic veg crates upended make a good 'table' anything falling though is then hoovered up by wildlife and no rat holes hiding under trays!

5.Goslings & Geese

**Main rule on geese talk to them as they respond to the voice not by sight so if an aggressive male gets cross simply hold out your arms and advance he  sees a giant goose and retreats. To keep them happy when sitting feed the gander first NOT the goose as his job is to protect her . . . she gets hormonal. . . he gets cross. He will often hiss at visiting male humans as he is so dim he sees them as a sexual threat taking his female. . . 99% of the time a warning but it is the only time thay can get fractious.**
Meat: All geese in the heavy and medium weight classes are good utility birds. The most common geese raised for meat are the Embden, Toulouse, and Pilgrim.


African geese adults can weigh up to 20 pounds, are grayish brown with a lighter breast, black beak, orange legs and feet and a black knob on their head. They are particularly noisy and have dark pinfeathers, so are more difficult to pluck because bits of pinfeathers are difficult to see against the dark skin.


Embdens, large white geese, are better at sitting on eggs than Toulouse. They are good breeders, and their white pinfeathers make them easier to pluck.


Pilgrim geese are fast growing, efficient meat producers. This is the only breed in which the sexes are different – females grey with a white breast and hazel eyes, males white with blue eyes. This very docile, medium-sized breed makes a good weeder.


 Romans are small, talkative geese with round bodies and enough meat to butcher.



Toulouse is the largest breed of geese; the Mammoth Dewlap strain can reach 26 pounds. Its back is dark gray, chest light gray, bill pale yellow, and the shanks and feet are red to orange. Not used for meat but as a crossing breed to produce meat breeds




Goose meat is darker (including the breast), fuller bodied, better flavoured than most turkey. It is fatter than duck. Of all fowl, goose meat offers the most opportunities to match with fine wine. Most associate Christmas goose with Victorian England. During the 19th century, in England,geese were served (like practically all other animals) at an older age than those of today -; up to nine months as opposed to four to six months. Older birds are tougher and the meat must be tenderized before cooking or slow 'range" cooked in the Aga or Rayburn


Geese have been spared "improved breeding", because unlike turkeys, cross breeding geese is much more difficult; many are totally dissimilar shapes and many will only mate with similar stock The natural cycle of raising geese is still intact: hatching, between April and July, and slaughter in September. White English, Toulouse and Chinese geese are the most popular with goose farms. Most geese are fed a mixture of corn, wheat and soybeans, although a few farmers feed their animals with vegetables including salads 


Mature geese carcasses weigh 18 - 19 lbs. ( 8 - 9 kg) althoughyoung animals weighing 10 - 14 lbs ( 4 1Ú2 to 5 1Ú2 Kg) are more popular . The yieldimproves with mature animals. Free-range fresh geese tend to be more tender and better flavoured than frozen. Goose contains a high proportion of fat and must be properly cooked .You can either blanch the bird for a few minutes, and prick the skin to release the fat, or 'crisp" the carcass in the refrigerator for a week, or roast for four hours at 250F (125C) in a convection oven, or start roasting at 475F (235C) for 15 minutes and reduce the heat to 375F  (180C)until done. Obviously, the bird must be basted frequently to prevent drying.




Dual Purpose Geese that can be used for meat and egg production are the African, Sebastopol, American Buff, Saddleback Pomeranian, Chinese,  Roman,  with the Embden, Toulouse, and African all attaining adult weights in excess of 19 pounds.

American Buffs are a light buff color with a white chest. They reach 14 to 18 pounds and have light colored pin feathers. These nicely behaved birds, easy to work with, are good grazers and are recommended as weeders but hard to come by as their size like all heavy geese means they breed less.
The most popular breeds for small flocks are Embden, Toulouse, African, Chinese, and Pilgrim.


Chinese geese can be white or brown. The whites have an orange knob and bill; browns have russet brown feathers, a brown head, a dark brown knob and bill. They weigh 8 to 12 pounds and are productive egg layers. Their long neck makes them swanlike and good at weeding around plants, putting their head out through the fence to plunder the garden,steal from other pens etc etc

1. Goose Quills and Feathers


In the countryside people used to use goose quills for the teats for bottle feeding orphan lambs until as late as the second war and for fishing floats. In the Victorian country house a house maids box always contained a few large goose pinions for dusting ledges and carved picture frames. A stiff trimmed goose pinion was also kept by the lady's maid for taking dust from velvet in the days before a dry cleaner did the same job. Quills were also used as valves and indicators for brewers in the fermenting bottles by the rise and fall of the liquid in the quill they could see the progress of the brew. The more well known usage of painters and artists was to use a large quill to hold their brushes of camel/sable or beaver hair . The size of watercolour and other brush handles has still not altered and they can still be used for this. One brush for lettering work and miniatures is still made to order from a single tuft of the curled tail feathers of a drake.


For the historically minded here are the instructions for making a quill pen from the Young Mans Companion of the mid eighteenth century.......... Take the first or second quill of a goose wing, and scrape it, and hold it in your lef thand , with the feather end from you. Beginning even with the back , cut a small piece off sloping , then make a slit , enter the knife in the midst of the first cut , and slit the quill up so far as you desire it .When the slit is done ,m cut away a piece from the other side , and fashion the nib by cutting off both sides equally. Place the nib on the nail of your left thumb, and draw the edge (end ?) into it halfway through ,then turn it and turn the edge down , and cut it off. Let your ink be thin ,and your paper be white and well gummed. Rub your paper lightly with gumrack , beaten fine and tied up with a linen cloth - which makes the paper bear the ink better and the pen run moresmoothly."

Their other major claim to fame is that the feather helped Sir Isaac Newton to write his first work on light and colour refraction . If you hold a feather to the sun and look through it the barbs on it distort the light like a prism andshow a rainbow effect.

6.Shelters & Housing 


Ducks and Geese need housing of varying sorts dependent upon the method kept. This can range from a barn for loads of meat birds to  cute 'Duckingham palace' or floating house for a pair of Calls. They all will have one major factor ... how you clean them as ducks or geese firing liquid poop requires different housing to tidier chickens that you can sweep the droppings and shavings up.


Rule 1. Does the house have a flat surface for cleaning /sweeping/hosing or sweet little nest boxes and barriers. If keeping more than Call Ducks in the back garden resist if you answered no to this as cleaning with a dustpan brush just isn't going to happen and the cute interior rooms are done to sell  to humans not for ducks private sex lives.


Rule 2. Can they get out of the door easily as many pop holes on hen houses are pretty useless for Geese/ Muscovy and even Runners but the video will make a mint on Youtube

Rule 3.Is it cute , cheap and made from nice softwood in China or the far east. . . check with a key or fingernail if it marks it is softwood. After a few seasons it is disintegrated scrap and false economy. If roofing felt is glued  down with geese they love playing tear the roof off if not beaten by bad weather first. ie You get what you pay for.

Rule 4. Divide cost by years of use and the modern recycled products based ones are now a b good buy.As are uk built  better wooden ones  but remember to treat inside once before adding birds or assembling as this will discourage mites. In future years very hot water plus jeyes fluid ( use goggles 'gloves etc) or hot water and bleach on the floor will keep it bug free. Do in summer or on a fine day prop open to dry then re treat the wood, allow to dry  again and the smell to disipate then put birds back for bed time

I bought the Kitson / Solway recycling ones as they have a pop hole PLUS a large duck/goose sized door at the other end. Bad news they add a hanging nest box ( used for pellets for supper in my case) and a removeable perch bar ( used to prop door open). I personally use them on the earth in summer and on a pallet in winter as most breeds will do one step. The pic below ( added soon) is over 10 years old and I found that if the pop hole is changed for a sheet of weldmesh in summer it is brilliant. . . no mites, no cleaning as I simply burn the pallet in Spring and add hay if very cold

Smallest Solway recycling coop. . . made from recycled farm  plastic  and drinks bottles,  any colour, reversible , UV proof etc so will not go brittle and crack minus point costs as pretty much hand made. . .  do not bother with the floor if for ducks either add a pallet or smaller mesh of your own. Never get the run as better to make your own with weldmesh sheet . Simply tie the corners of weldmesh and move/ re assemble where needed without a bad back from lifting  a fixed run or get a removeable run if for a tiny garden


Alternative garden shed from most suppliers such as B&Q  if a shelf is added above the  birds then it can be used to store shavings/food etc and is still cheaper than the cute house online

Extreme Cold

Welfare of your birds ..  rule protect them they are not fox proof and leaving them unprotected is cruel... finding Foxes in snow is easier though. Just because it is cold does not mean the waterfowl will suffer. Bread although not strictly good for them is popular especially if the chip pan oil is added also sliced fruit and veg .
. . .Waterfowl are sweet toothed by preference and please no salt as poisonous to them. Pallets if really frozen are good decking to sit upon, off the ground.
 . . Watch if using electric fence as ice can short it out.. . . .  
 . .The good news if pestered by vermin the tracks allow you to find their homes and feed accordingly. . . . very obliging foxes reveal themselves at this time normally a vixen. who will keep using the same lair. Locate the rat nest or lair now to save problems in the future . .Icy weather is also the best for rat control they show where they are active and are hungry so do NOT delay until further into Spring when they have bred more babies
Their needs alter if the ground is icy they will need drinking water at least once per day. .  by preference warm to hot with a slurp of cheapest vegetable oil (and a  spoon of sugar/optional). . . this allows them to drink before it freezes and the oil allows them to groom and waterproof their feathers. Watch their feet as some are prone to frostbite in extreme weather if sleeping outside  as some will lose toes etc . . . .if just sore add hand/barrier cream or E45 and separate for a few days to recover. . . catching them being the first hurdle . .  . refer to sliced bread again corruption and bribery is always best

Needs; shade if the pens are not planted up do so put bricks around plants/bushes roots / stem until they establish. The only weedkiller of use is SBK to de-nettle the areas. Do NOT plant willow they love it as a snack but dislike buddleia as above ! They ignore phormiums, pampas grass etc even irises and lilies but check if human friendly as pampas grass as I discovered bites !
More ducks die from lack of drinking water than lack of food also from fly strike on open feathered breeds so watch them esp Pekin and Toulouse.

7.Humidity

Humidity plays a vital role in the percentage of hatch and even more so in the quality of hatch. The combination of too high a humidity in both setter and hatcher can result in drowning the chicks in the shell. Too low humidity in incubator will result in 'dry sticks' Too high a humidity in hatcher during the first twenty-four to thirty-six hours can result in rough and unhealed navels, although this condition is more frequently due to excessive incubator temperature. Too low a humidity in the hatcher can result in chicks which pip but fail to get out of the shell.

  A suitable humidity must be maintained to prevent the eggs drying out too quickly or losing sufficient water. All incubators have one or more water containers, trays or troughs which should be kept topped up with water to maintain an appropriate humidity, according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use hand-hot (39 °C) water to prevent the temperature in the incubator dropping too dramatically when refilled. In hard water areas boiled or distilled water means that wicks etc. last longer . Do not move the incubator while containing water. In some incubators, a piece of cloth may be needed to act as a'wick'.

  Too much humidity at the wrong time is just as bad for a developing egg as too dry an atmosphere: an egg must lose a certain amount of water during incubation if the duckling is to emerge satisfactorily.

  Some incubators are supplied with a wet- and dry-bulb thermometer.The wet bulb is for obtaining readings of humidity. It is very difficult to obtain accurate readings with such a device and not recommended that they are used by beginners. It is often better to check humidity by assessing the effects on the egg,, rather than to obtain actual measurements.

  Relatively accurate electronic instruments for measuring humidity(called hygrometers) are now available but the most useful of these werequite expensive ( see ebay) . Manufacturers supply units which will control the humidity in certain of their incubators.

The eggs must have a suitable flow of air to supply enough oxygenfor the embryos to develop and to remove the carbon dioxide produced. The ventilation will, however, also affect both the humidity and the temperature; a high ventilation rate will carry more moist, warm air out of the incubator.

  Follow the guidance offered by the incubator manufacturer. Various authorities quote a wide range of suitable humidities but it is difficult to produce an exact humidity in the incubator and to measure it accurately. Ensure,,that the water tray never dries out completely and do not have a very humid atmosphere together with poor ventilation.If the eggs are in an egg tray on a dish cloth or piece of Hessian, do not add water to the material to make it damp. Also do not spray the eggs daily with a mist of water, although this has been recommended by some authorities. Ducks and Geese swim eggs don't.

  Humidity levels should be varied during incubation but it isdifficult to give precise advice. As a rule, during the first half of the incubation period, the humidity should be at a low to medium level;the second half requires a medium level of humidity. Some authorities recommend a dryer atmosphere around day 27 to help the duckling break into the air space. As soon as the eggs become 'pipped', with the duckling starting to break out of the shell, the humidity should be raised to a higher level for hatching. It is essential that the eggs lose 12-15% of their weight over the incubation period. Humidity that is too high or too low will cause too little or too much weight to be lost. Water loss can be monitored by measuring loss (by weighing the eggs) or by observing the size of the air space - using a technique called 'candling' . Measuring the loss of weight is probably the better technique to use but is more troublesome to carry out and requires a reasonably accurate balance. Candling requires some skill but is more easily learnt..
By removing a batch of eggs and weighing them at regular intervals, the loss in weight can be monitored and adjustments to humidity made. (It is better to measure the weight of several eggs and calculate the average loss per egg because the balance probably available is unlikely to be sufficiently accurate for small weights.) Ensure that the eggs are not excessively chilled when they are being weighed; measurements should be carried out quickly. A cloth in he scales helps prevent damage.




Errors
1. Eggs clear no blood

8. Incubation

INCUBATORS
To develop and hatch, eggs require the following to be controlled.
Warmth - to encourage the embryos to develop at a natural rate, the eggs of different species requiring different optimum temperatures.
Humidity - to control the normal weight loss of the egg that must happen during incubation for hatching and to prevent egg shell membranes becoming too dry for hatching. Different humidity levels are needed to be provided at certain stages of incubation, with a very high humidity at the time of hatching.If hatching in a barn often incubators can run dry as the climate alters. . . try to find out
Ventilation - to ensure a good supply of oxygen and, importantly remove the carbon dioxide produced so that it does not poison the developing ducklings. An appropriate air flow also encourages evaporation of water for the essential weight loss of the egg.
Turning - at regular intervals, to prevent the egg membranes from sticking to the inside of the shell and to ensure the eggs warmevenly. Egg turning also increases the oxygen intake of the embryo and encourages correct development.
In natural situations, all these requirements would, of course, be provided by the broody duck or hen. In an artificial environment, they must be provided by the incubator. Keeping the correct conditions around the eggs is a 24-hour job and errors could result in death of the developing birds.
There are various designs of egg incubators available commercially and small, normally still-air, models are the cheapest/ easiest. 'Homemade' incubators may not provide adequate regulation of all the critical conditions and may therefore reduce the success of hatching waterfowl but will work very well on the less fussy chickens . Commercial hatcheries usually hatch around 80% of (fertile) hen's eggs.
Turning the eggs needs to be carried out at least twice a day,including at weekends. Because of this, an automatic egg-turning facility for the incubator is a very high priority.
BASIC TYPES As might be expected, commercial egg incubators are available to suit everyone ; amateur and professional users. There are two main types of incubators: the still-air variety which relies on convection for ventilation and forced-air models which tend to be larger and more expensive with correspondingly more to adjust/ go wrong for the beginner .. . . or cheat and splash out on an automatic computer controlled one such as Mainho and be lazy
Before deciding which incubator to buy, you should consider thefollowing points.

.....................Is the incubator electrically safe ? Many have fans that collect feather dust and to clean MUST be disconected from the electrics as they give a good belt if touched. Small portable hoovers work  and a softish brush to clean the fan helps
.................... . How easy is it to see the incubating eggs ?
......................Ensure that a thermometer will be sufficiently sensitive and accurate over the range 35 - 45 °C, it is important to use one that has been made for use with an incubator ( garden thermometers etc. are often inaccurate). All the incubator manufacturers and suppliers also list various types of thermometer,specifically produced for such work. Wet- and dry-bulb thermometers are often recommended, as these also measure humidity. However, such readings are often inaccurate and difficult for total beginners. Also digital ones are now cheaper and much more useful being less likely to break and easy and idiot proof to read
........................Does the incubator have the facility to turn the eggs automatically ? The eggs must be turned regularly and although you can do this manually during the day, it is helpful if eggs are also turned at night and essential at weekends.
......................Does the incubator have an appropriate egg capacity ? Some models are very large while others are almost too small. In deciding which incubator is most suitable for your needs, it is important not to underestimate the capacity which will be needed . Larger is normally cheaper ! Also look for incubators that cope with both Call Duck eggs and Goose eggs.......many can cope only with smaller/ medium eggs. Small and visual = cheap but useless designed for a few batches of up to 6 buy the biggest as then you do not need to upgrade and more saleable later

MODELS
How much can be afforded ? It could be a big mistake simply to buy the cheapest incubator. A good strategy is to choose the incubator that meets your needs and then see if your budget can stretch a little, if necessary. I have not included the more expensive incubators (though some suggested models are still quite costly). I can supply a list of telephone numbers etc. if wished.
Of interest is an inexpensive incubator manufactured by ECoSTAT whichis widely available This circular design incubator is made from expanded polystyrene and, is ok but basic similar models are made by'Therbo' incubators which are also made from expanded polystyrene, 'Ovo-lux', 'Hova-Bator' and 'Matador Special' . These often need protecting from small children who enjoy prodding weapons into polystyrene boxes. The Hova Bator Window is also cellophane stuck in and flimsy ..but still works well.
When ordering your incubator, it is wise to purchase an additional incubator thermometer in case of breakage ( or go digital). You may also need items for candling eggs, brooding and feeding ducklings etc.and you may want to order some of these from the same source. This will help avoid small-order delivery charges.  Incubators: There are "still air" and "fan forced" models, eachwith a different set of operating instructions. Always follow the directions carefully for your particular incubator. Most incubators canbe fitted with an egg turning device to save the operator from the task of manually turning the eggs by hand several times a day. First decide what type of incubator best meets your needs. Incubators are included in many poultry supply catalogues. There will be descriptions of their capacities and the mode of their operation (still air or fan forced).

Incubators
Whichever model of incubator you have available, it is vital to referto the manufacturers instructions supplied with it. (replacements are available for almost all but the Hannaford Paraffin models! ) These have been written to give the best results with that particular model and some aspects may not be applicable when using other incubators. For this reason, it is not easy to provide detailed guidance which will be appropriate for working with all types of incubator. These notes,therefore, are a general guide only.
Using an Incubator
Place the incubator on a level surface in a position which is not proneto vast fluctuations in temperature and humidity, i.e., out of draughts, direct sunlight and away from central-heating radiators (Sheds and barns good ....bedrooms bad unless you like the perfume of an exploded rotten egg !). Be warned that in winter, rooms become verycold at night once the heating is off. If the temperature drop is too great, it is quite likely that the incubator will be unable to maintaina steady temperature. It is therefore best to avoid incubating eggs during the coldest months if temperature regulation is likely to be aproblem. Mechanical damage to the developing embryos caused by bumping the incubator may cause severe damage to delicate membranes and organs,and so the movement of an incubator is not recommended. NEVER put the incubator on carpet as the fibrous surface prevents air passage. If indoubt about airways put on two 2 x 2 wooden bars to allow a good air change.

In most incubators, the thermometer should be positioned where the top of the eggs will be. Manufacturers' recommended temperature settings could therefore lie anywhere between 38 °C and 39.5 °C(100.5-103 °F). In normal incubator operation, temperatures may fluctuate slightly but they should not be allowed to pass outside this range. As the eggs develop, the embryos will give off some heat and this may require you to alter the thermostat setting slightly to decrease the temperature.
3. Once the correct temperature setting for the type of eggs to be incubated has been achieved, it is wise to tape over the temperature control to dissuade 'tweaking' the knob ! ( Yoghurt pots for small children work well ..tape over all the adjusting knobs). If possible, position the incubator so that the temperature control is hidden against a wall. Consider plugging the incubator into an audible alarm unit; this will indicate if there is a power failure for any reason.Even with such a device, it is a good idea to affix a 'PLEASE LEAVE ON' sign to the mains plug and so avoid accidental switching off by others.These may be available locally as freezer alarm plugs or can be purchased from egg incubator suppliers including Brinsea Products;etc Incubators, It is also sensible to keep a temperature record card, logging readings every morning and evening. This is an easy way of checking that the incubator is functioning correctly and the card could also be used for a record of egg turning, if this is being done by hand.or buy auto !

For example, in a cool room (below 16°C), a minimum level of ventilation should be sufficient; with room temperatures >16 °C, more ventilation should normally be provided. On some incubators, a flap covering ventilation holes may need to be moved; in others, the number of holes that are left open mayneed to be altered.
10. Frequent checks should be made to ensure that nothing is preventing adequate ventilation. If using a vintage  incubator with an insulated quilt cover that fits over the observation dome, ensure that the quilt does not block the top ventilation hole. A rolled up tube of paper inserted through the holes in the cover and quilt is a good idea. Old vintage iron clads make superb brooders ... use one tray a paper covered/ droppings tray under neath etc
Incubating Eggs
1. First, allow the fertile eggs to warm up to room temperature for at least l0 hours before placing them into the incubator. Cool eggs may lower the temperature of the incubator or be stressed if they are warmed up too quickly. If transported a long way stand blunt end up overnight to settle.
In Curfew  and old incubators, whenever eggs are to be placed into an egg tray, it is important to line the tray first with a piece of loose-weave material such as / or a dishcloth. (Hessian should beprovided with new incubators; spares are available from Curfew Incubators.) Since the tray has a metal mesh, this can become very hot,so it is essential that all the eggs are on the cloth inside the tray (and also are not touching the vertical sides of the tray, if these are also made of metal). The material must not be moistened with water.
2. If all goes to plan, the ducklings should hatch after 28 (35 Muscovy) days, so do not set the eggs on a Monday or they will hatch out at the weekend.
3. Turning helps to prevent the developing membranes from sticking tothe inside of the shell. Eggs may be turned by hand, because the incubator has no automatic turn facility . Manual turning of eggs needs to be carried out at least twice, preferably three times and, ideally, five times a day for miniature breeds as the mums are naturally fidgety, including at weekends.
4. For incubators other than the Brinsea 'Octagon' types, as the eggs are added to the incubator, mark each one lightly with an 'X' in pencil on one side and 'O' on the opposite side. Also write the date if different batches of eggs will be added to the incubator later..... not around the waist of the egg as the duckling normally hatches here.
5. With most incubators, the eggs are turned through l 80° aroundtheir long axis, not end to end. At each turn, move the eggs so that the 'X' and 'O' marks are alternately visible. Turning is best achieved by rolling each egg, using the finger tips, into an adjacent space. If the incubator is very crowded, it may be necessary to remove some eggs at one end so the other eggs can be rolled into the space made available. The removed eggs are then placed in the space created after rolling. Hands should be warm to prevent chilling the eggs (especially for those spring hatching)
With 'Octagon' incubators, eggs can be turned without opening the incubator by tipping the entire unit from 45° on one side to 45° on the other side. However, do not worry about opening the incubator for a short time to turn eggs. Although the temperature will temporarily drop, the developing ducklings will not be harmed; afterall, a broody hen does not sit on the eggs all the time !
Some authorities claim that eggs should sometimes be turned clockwise and then counter-clock wise. If eggs in a manual-turn incubator are turned an odd number of times each day, they will not repeatedly spend each long, night time period in the same orientation.
6. By the 24 th day, the eggs no longer need to be turned.

Ensure that the eggs are not excessively chilled when they are being weighed; measurements should be carried out quickly. A cloth in he scales helps prevent damage.

Candling
 This involves holding the egg in front of a bright light in a darkened room so that the light shines through the shell. A simple way to do this is to cut a 4 cm hole in a piece of card and hold this over the bright light with the egg in front of the hole. The small cheap halogen table lamps are brilliant for the denser goose eggs.. to make even more deluxe put a piece of plywood with a hole over the lamp to view through ... careful they get hot !
At early stages, the embryo will be seen as a dark spot, perhaps also showing the blood vessels radiating outwards(looks like a red spider!). A completely clear egg is infertile. As the egg develops, the air space at the broad end becomes larger as moisture evaporates from the egg. As the embryo becomes larger, little light will pass through the egg except to show the air space.
If it becomes apparent that the air space is too small or too large for the stage of development reached, there will have been, respectively, too little or too much evaporation of water from the egg. If the airspace is too small, ventilation should be increased (and/or humidity decreased). If the air space is too large, the ventilation is too high and should be reduced (and/or humidity increased).
*Candling should be performed as quickly as possible to avoid excessive chilling of the eggs. If candling reveals that eggs are infertile or the ducklings have died, the eggs should be removed from the incubator.

HATCHING EGGS

Towards the end of the incubation period, after day 24, the eggs no longer need to be turned as the ducklings have largely completed their external development and the animal is manoeuvring itself into the correct position to make the break in the egg shell (the process called'pipping' ...when they draw oxygen in to their lungs for the first time) If sitting the goose or duck will actually talk to the hathing eggs to imprint her voice on them aso a good guide to iminemt hatch time. Ensure that ventilation is adequate, as there is a real risk that the ducklings can be suffocated by a build up of carbon dioxide at this time.... on a Brinsea worth putting on a wire rack or wooden frame to increase airflow and NEVER put the incubator on carpet
1. Ideally, the air in the incubator should be drier on day 24, to helpthe ducklings break through the egg membranes into the air space. As soon as eggs are pipped, however, a high humidity is needed to stop exposed membranes from drying out, becoming tough and leathery and preventing normal hatching. In many situations, however, all eggs willnot pip at the same time and so it will be impossible to provide the best conditions for both pipping and hatching. This is when a second incubator, used as a hatcher, is ideal; eggs are transferred in batches as they become pipped. Without a separate hatcher, wait until about a third of the eggs have pipped and then increase humidity. At this stage, do not keep opening the incubator to check on progress as this will allow the moist air to escape which takes some time to build up again.

2. The ducklings hatch. On day 28, though there is often some variationin development rate, the ducklings should begin to hatch. There can be a period of many hours between the first hole being made in the shelland final emergence. Only intervene if it appears that a duckling has become stuck for a period of 24 hours or more. Then it may be helpful to enlarge very carefully the hole with forceps or scissors. Keep the points of the instruments parallel to the shell and not inserted inwards or the duckling may be skewered.. . . thie results in death for one and nausea for the owner
Hatching can take a long time in some species; duck and turkey eggs for example can take between 36 hours and 3 days. If these species are being kept, it is important not to become impatient and help the birds along !
3. When the duckling emerges it will be wet, often blood stained andvery weak as in pic above . It will need at least 12 hours to dry out and it will be some time before it can stand without falling over. It should be left in the incubator or hatcher for this period and then removed to a brooder. There may be insufficient oxygen in an incubator for many ducklings to breathe and an incubator is an unsuitable enclosure in which to feed and water the young animals( and to clean up after them).
4. The yolk sac attached to the developing embryo inside the egg and is normally absorbed during the final days of incubation. Occasionally a duckling may hatch with its yolk sac hanging out. Its survival is endangered and the bird should be isolated. The yolk sac may naturally be re-absorbed but this takes time and the duckling must be kept in clean conditions to prevent infection. If, given time, re-absorption does not happen or the duckling is obviously in distress, it should be humanely destroyed as should any ducklings with other deformities or evident illness; . Any animal which is isolated and later returned to the brooder may be attacked by other birds more likely with calls oddly. It works best if the animal is reintroduced at a time when food is given to all the ducklings so that attention is diverted away from the newcomer.
5. A feature of the development of the duckling is the formation of an external pouch and membranes called the allantois. Waste materials are deposited in this structure. The remains of the allantois and its wastes are sometimes seen still attached to the rear end of the hatched duckling. The remains will dry up and drop off.
6. Even with eggs set on the same day, there can be a lot of variationin the time they take to hatch and so it is important to wait at least 72 hours before discarding unhatched eggs. The remains from hatched eggs should be removed from the incubator as soon as possible and these, together with unhatched eggs, should be disposed off hygienically . The incubator should then be cleaned out and disinfected ( Milton is easily available if nothing better is around, baby wipes are useful too!)

Using a Brooder
An incubator should not be used to house ducklings, once they have hatched, rested and their feathers dried out. A brooder needs to be bought or constructed to house the ducklings and keep them warm;because of their small size, ducklings have a relatively large surface area from which to lose heat. A brooder is simply a form of enclosure with an overhead heat source. . . . box, cage , old fish tank something you can clean
The brooder must be sited away from draughts and placed on a largesheet of paper, preferably not newspaper.( food sacks are good) Some people suggest that the floor of the brooder should then be covered with a layer of good-quality wood shavings (not sawdust), available from pet shops or, more economically, in large bales from specialist suppliers (see Yellow Pages under "Sawdust and Shavings"). This, however, is not essential and does add to the mess that must routinely be cleared up.
Ducklings suffer from cramp if kept on a cold surface. Ideally theyshould be reared off the floor, on a wooden surface. Wherever the brooder is placed, it is wise to protect the surface by covering it with polythene or newspaper. as all waterfowl are incontinent..... and smelly
It may be necessary to cover the brooder with wire netting at some stage to prevent the birds climbing out (Muscovies appear to be relatives of apes when small). Many brooders use ordinary lamp bulbs, operating at reduced voltage, to provide a source of heat.
 
Heating : A cheaper modern alternative is the small tubular heaters designed fro spare rooms, posher  ones for greenhouses  etc running at low wattage. I have used these for a few years they need the 'feet' on the tube and will be climbed over and pooped on  ( remove when dry!)

Lamps
1. Some means will be needed to suspend the lamp over the brooder. If using the Torne Valley lamp kit, the reflector should be suspended using the chain provided and not dangled by the flex to prevent electrical fires. The red infra red bulb is for loads of babies  so often best changed for an ordinary 60 watt NOT an eco bulb which is cold they need warmth rather than illumination.
An alternative, possibly cheaper, source of heat is to use an 'anglepoise' lamp. This is not designed to be used with higher wattage bulbs, so it is necessary to remove the lampshade or cover and insertat least a 60 W bulb. Check that this produces a sufficiently high temperature in the brooder, and if necessary use more than one lamp.
2. A thermometer to check the temperature in the brooder will berequired; a simple room thermometer can be used for this. In the early days after hatching the ducklings must be kept very warm at about 35°C (95 °F). As they increase in size, the temperature can be reduced by about 3 °C (5 °F) each week. ducklings will need tobe given some warmth in a brooder for about 6 weeks until they have acquired their adult plumage on their chests and their wings begin toedge with feather quills .
3. Experiment with the height of the lamp above the brooder to obtainthe correct temperature before adding the ducklings. The lamp should not normally be lowered so that it is within the walls of the brooder as cooking may occur. When the ducklings are installed, watch their behaviour and adjust the height of the lamp if necessary. It is normal for the ducklings to avoid the central spot immediately below the lamp but, if they move to the periphery of the enclosure and possibly alsoshow some distress with open beaks and panting, it is evidently too hot. Huddling together tightly is a sign that ducklings are too cold.
***These Tables enable you to calculate the relative humidity of yourincubator at given temperatures . The wet bulb if you haven't one is a thermometer with wick or other cloth strapped around it with one end ina water supply to keep the end damp

Most Waterfowl hatch at around 48 relative humidity but this also takes into account where the incubator is kept and your area i.e.. if in a cool shed with a reasonable background humidity try the bottom end of the scale to see how the eggs progress. If indoors in a dry room thetop etc.

9.Rearing

Raising ducks is virtually foolproof provided they are kept warm, dry and well fed,ducklings almost rear themselves.

Brooding For a few weeks after hatching, all young birds require to be kept warm. Normally this is done by the mother but, when rearing artificially, we need a source of warmth. Fortunately young waterfowl can walk and feed themselves within a few hours of breaking out of the egg, so their care is very simple. Once your ducklings have hatched, leave them in the incubator for a couple of hours to dry off and then transfer them to a brooding pen or hutch. The simplest arrangement is a small rectangle with wooden walls laid over newspaper on the floor of a garage or shed. The walls need only be twelve inches high and a wire mesh top will prevent the little birds jumping out (very neccessary for Muscovy or wildfowl...they climb !) As mentioned previously, a source of heat must be provided. For most ducklings, an ordinary old style 60 or 100-watt light bulb will be perfectly adequate for up to 40 ducklings or a tube heater as sold on eBay for greenhouses.. cheapest size. . Use additional bulbs for extra units of 20 birds. Begin with the bulb positioned about seven inches from the floor and adjust the height by observing the behaviour of the ducklings. If they huddle together beneath the bulb, it requires to be lowered while, on the other hand, if they stay at the perimeter of their pen, the bulb needs to be raised. Keep the bulb on constantly for the first two weeks, raising it an inch every three days. During week three, turn it off for an hour on day one, two hours on day two and so on and then, at the start of the fourth week, provide heat only during the hours of darkness. If weather conditions are normal for the time of year, you should be able to dispense with artificial heat by the end of that week. After a week indoors without heat, the young birds can be transferred to an outdoor pen which is best constructed with wire mesh in a suitable corner of the garden. Do, however, provide a hutch or covered area so that the birds can obtain shelter from heavy rain.


Food and Drink Feeding ducklings presents no problems at all. For the first four weeks, feed them on ordinary chick crumbs which you can buy in small quantities from any good pet shop. Ducklings will eat those crumbs immediately upon hatching. From four weeks of age until feathering, the young birds should be fed grower's pellets which, once again, can be obtained from a pet shop or agricultural supplier. At all stages, simply feed ad-lib, leaving a constant supply of food with the birds and allowing them to eat as much and as often as they want. Sometimes they appreciate a few greens to augment their diet and the easy way of providing these is to hang a lettuce in their pen for them to peck at. Clean water must be available constantly but it must be provided in a manner which prevents the little birds taking a bath in it. Although day old ducklings will swim in the wild, they are able to do this because they are waterproofed by a film of oil which they get from their mother's plumage. Your hand-reared ducklings will not have this protection and will chill if they become wet. The best type of drinker is the inverted jam jar model which suppliers like Eltex can provide very cheaply. A larger model will be useful after the first week or so but be sure to put some small stones around the exposed area so that the birds cannot clamber in for a swim!

Eventually, at the age of seven or eight weeks, the day will come when you can release your birds into the garden. Ducklings can go straight out to a suitable pond and see how much truth they give to the phrase "taking like a duck to water". Provided there is sufficient plant life in the pond (to harbour insects), you need only scatter a few scoops of food around the margins to supplement the natural feeding which will be available. It is wise to avoid hand-feeding duck any more than is absolutely necessary as they tend to become over-tame and fall east prey to predators.. Looking after those birds over the spring and summer takes very little time and effort .Memo for the lazy a childs fishing net collects fast running ducklings easier than crawling through the shrubs.

***beware slug pellets are intensely fatal to ducklings and goslings as are some fly sprays....read the label to check ...if harmful to cage birds they also kill poultry.*****

There are many reasons for keeping geese. They will eat slugs and snails, and the geese will control your overgrown grass.

Rearing Geese">Small group can be brooded by broody hens and most breeds of ducks other than Pekin and Runner. If they aren't hatched by the broody, place them under her at night so that she will accept them. Goslings can be brooded artificially in about the same way as chicks. Due to their rapid growth, they will need heat a shorter period of time, and floor space requirements will increase rapidly.

Starting the goslings is not difficult. Start with clean quarters. The environment should rodent free. For smaller numbers all you need is a large cardboard box, some shavings or hay, a heat lamp, a feeder and water. Any small building; garage or corner can be used as a brooding area for small numbers of birds. The brooding area should be dry, reasonably well lit and ventilated, and free from draughts.

***When raising Muscovy ducklings and some ornamental geese, keep in mind that they are very good climbers. Make sure that they will not burn themselves in the heat source should they climb the sides. Or, escape over the top if using an open brooder.** old fridge shelves are excellent brooder lids**

BROODING; Infrared heat lamps are a convenient source of heat for brooding small numbers of birds. The most commonly used brooder is the 4 bulb, 250 watt (heat bulb) brooder lamp. These lamps are adequate for 300 chicks. Use one 250-watt lamp for 30 goslings or alternatively a 60 watt ordinary light bulb for a few. Heat lamps provide radiant heat to the birds under them. Since the air isn't heated, room temperature measurement isn't as important. When using hover-type brooders, brood only a quarter as many goslings as chick capacity. Because goslings are larger than chicks in size, it may be necessary to raise 3 to 4 inches, higher yet for goslings. Have the temperature at the edge 85 to 90 degrees F when they arrive. Reduce it 5 to 10 degrees per week.

You will be able to tell on sight if the gosling are warm enough. If they are too hot, they will move away from the heat. If too cold they may pile up and be noisy. The birds will be moving around, eating and drinking if they are comfortable. High temperatures may result in slower feathering and growth. When decreasing the temperature consider the behavior of your goslings at all times.

As they grow, they will need more space and less heat. Observe the birds - if they stay away from the heat, turn it off - if they get their pen messy rapidly, they need more bedding and more space. Supplementary heat may be needed for 5 to 6 weeks in cold weather; in summer, only 2 to 3 weeks. By five or six weeks they can probably be outside all the time, except in extremely cold, wet weather. Make sure it's good weather before you put them outside. In some areas attention to predator control may be necessary when the goslings are turned out in my area red kites adore fresh gosling

10 Sexing

Drawing below is from 1904 but it is the clearest most obvious description. With an adult goose a knowledge of various wrestling holds and often a strong coat is useful. I once watched a male friend show somone how to sex a large Embden gander wearing shorts and T shirt .. gander won but the video would have made a fortune


11. Weather


COLD WEATHER
Welfare of your birds .. rule protect them they are not fox proof and leaving them unprotected is cruel... finding Foxes in snow is easier though. Just because it is cold does not mean the waterfowl will suffer. Bread although not strictly good for them is popular especially if the chip pan oil is added also sliced fruit and veg . . . .Waterfowl are sweet toothed by preference and please no salt as poisonous to them. Pallets if really frozen are good decking to sit upon, off the ground. . . Watch if using electric fence as ice can short it out.. . . . . .The good news if pestered by vermin the tracks allow you to find their homes and feed accordingly. . . . very obliging foxes reveal themselves at this time normally a vixen. who will keep using the same lair. Locate the rat nest or lair now to save problems in the future . .Icy weather is also the best for rat control they show where they are active and are hungry so do NOT delay until further into Spring when they have bred more babies
Their needs alter if the ground is icy they will need drinking water at least once per day. . by preference warm to hot with a slurp of cheapest vegetable oil (and a spoon of sugar/optional). . . this allows them to drink before it freezes and the oil allows them to groom and waterproof their feathers. Watch their feet as some are prone to frostbite in extreme weather if sleeping outside as some will lose toes etc . . . .if just sore add hand/barrier cream or E45 and separate for a few days to recover. . . catching them being the first hurdle . . . refer to sliced bread again corruption and bribery is always best


HOT WEATHER
Needs;shade if the pens are not planted up do so put bricks around plants/bushes until they establish. The only weedkiller of use is SBK to de-nettle the areas. Do NOT plant willow they love it as a snack but dislike buddleia as above ! More ducks die from lack of drinking water than lack of food also from fly strike on open feathered breeds so watch them.

12. Sex Linked Breeds

From an academic point of view all varieties of common duck can be used in sex-linked matings provided the right breed is selected as a partner normally a gold/silver mating . Basically, the two sex-linked dilution genes in ducks are Brown (the more common) and Buff.  There are numerous potential sex-linked matings that can be done, basically any drake that carries Brown or Buff on any female  that is Black or Grey (Mallard)
Sex-linked ducks are a type bred so that it's possible to determine the gender of ducklings at the time of hatch based on the color of their down.  Or as the science-types say it, "Sex linkage is the phenotypic expression of an allele that is dependent on the gender of the individual and is directly tied to the sex chromosomes."
main Breeds:-  Welsh Harlequin, Abacot Ranger, Saxony , Ancona in the USA. Many breeds show a bill difference as an adult but not until almost feathered

Welsh Harlequin female + male when starting to feather. Once the ducks are mature, the females will have a darker bill, whereas the male will have a yellow bill - which is the opposite of the bill color difference when they hatch.

Many of the breeds are helpful this  way naturally plus you can breed many with conflicting gene types such as dark  Campells to White Campbells which produce sex linked first crosses.

In a Muscovy 'Chocolate' is the only sex-linked gene :-

 chocolate X chocolate = 100% chocolate
 chocolate X black = black drakelets that carry chocolate and chocolate ducklets.
 chocolate X blue = black and blue males that carry chocolate, chocolate and lilac females.
 chocolate X self-blue = black males that carry chocolate and pastel and chocolate females that carry
pastel.
 chocolate X lilac = 50% chocolate ducklings, 50% lilac ducklings.

Geese

When the sex of both goslings and mature geese can be distinguished by the colour. This is known as auto-sexing. Sex-linked European breeds are the Pilgrim, Shetland, West of England, and Normandy, Bavent and Cotton Patch Geese in other countries  see their pages above. Sex linking can be bred in any cross as in the duck breeds  via the gold silver gene mating :-Breeds with white colour or some white colour often carry what we call the silver gene. This is a dominant or partially dominant gene—meaning it only takes one dose to express itself. When a female with the silver gene is crossed to a solid coloured male, her sons will be white and her daughters will be the colour of their father (though often with white undercolour). Male chicks will hatch with yellow down and females will be like their dad (usually buff or red tinted).

Below the female displays a  grey saddle-back pattern plus grey thighs  and head. In these breeds the  gander is mainly white with the odd tiddly patch of colour .


13. Security

 Foxes: To lose one bird to a fox is distressing. To lose your entire flock to a fox attack can be soul destroying, it can lead to some people giving up poultry keeping rather than continue to struggle with persistent predation and the associated trauma.  There are  a number of techniques: electric fences, roofed-in runs, dug-in wire, radios. Also the times your birds are most at risk is when foxes are feeding their cubs in the spring. Another time to be careful is around August time when the mother leaves the cubs to go and find their own food. You are more likely to have a visit from a  young fox during the daytime when the cubs are learning to hunt and aren’t so wary of people.
1. Don't let your flock out into an unsecured area too early in the morning. If there is insufficient noise and disturbance (non-chicken related) in the area then it's quite possible a fox may be lying in wait more foxes eat early than at night
2. Keep your boundaries well secured. Foxes will look to exploit any weakness, be that a short circuit in an electric fence or by expanding a hole dug by a rabbit or rat . It may take weeks for the fox to find one, but you can be sure if your birds are on the usual route the fox takes, it will check.
3. Walk around your flock at irregular times. A pattern to your movements is no different to a weakness in your fence.
4. When the birds go to bed, be there to close the door - in fact be there 15 minutes before.
5. Be aware that foxes can and do feed during the day so a fence to dscourage him in the darker months does help

THE most effective means of protection if done properly: poultry fencing or an electric fence. A good fence should be at least 6 feet high if it’s not electrified and ideally have an outward sloping top to prevent the fox from climbing over into your  run.
Electric fences are becoming more popular and are really quite good at keeping foxes out if they are working correctly. If the battery is flat, or the fence is shorted to ground via some overgrown vegetation touching the wires then it is a pretty pointless exercise. Electric fences come in two varieties – electric poultry netting that has electric strands running through it and the electrified ‘wire’ that is placed in front of the existing fence to stop a fox digging under or climbing over the fence, often called a tri-wire. To be effective, there needs to be electrified strands at sniffing height. For two legged thieving foxes I prefer the 36 inch inside leg height. . . mine is mains more of a fiddle to install but safer and needs weekly rather than daily checks


Locking up your birds at night This seems to be obvious – and of course it won’t stop visits during the late afternoon or early morning but you are more likely to have a fox visit during the night. So lock up those birds EVERY night without fail! Automatic Pop hole openers work better with hens than ducks unless trained from tiny

Secure accommodation again  fairly obvious one but imagine a dog or cat with the fridge , a fox is no different in terms of strength and if he can get hold of a panel or door he can tug quite hard to open or break it. Flimsy door catches on a hen-house in an unfenced area present no great challenge to a determined hungry fox.

Rehoming Urban foxes. . . one nice man in a van dropped a load off near the A303 for a new life in the country.... it was short those not shot on arrival  did not agree with baited traps. If you move a cub you are giving the problem to someone else contact an animal charity. Ditto with ferrets I once had 15 in a week one tame one survived.

Hunting Cam 'pir' by preference with night vision . . . now much cheaper from China on ebay. I found my thief was not fox shaped but gentlemen with dogs and remember if not close leg rung the police cannot determine ownership so the thief keeps the birds. Another one nicely photographed was a local person actually stealing eggs and chicks  but as their car then shed all its tyre valves whilst on my property I doubt if he returns. Stealing is a soft touch crime  as virtually no chance of getting caught or the birds returned so the camera proves wonderful

Rats. .  yes they steal food they also cross infect birds and will kill youngsters so do keep up with watching for runs and feed them well with a bait that they are not resistant to in your area. If unsure ring environmantal health they will tell you the best sort to use. The type of trap below works fantastically with mice but rats need a bigger barrel. . . the bait is peanut butter , cat food works too

As with many domesticated species, ducks have been  selected for different purposes,  meat production and egg production, for exhibition (shows), pest controland as pets. If you plan to raise ducks, it is important to choose a breed that best suits your particular needs.All domesticated duck breeds (escept one)  are believed to have originated from the wild mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) and can cross breed unless penned seperately
